Drop, Bubble & Particle Sizing

Sizing Systems - for size measurements of drops / droplets, bubbles and solid particles, including on-line and at-line particle sizing systems - VisiSizer PDIA

Sizing Software - for image analysis of drop / droplet, bubble and particle size and shape measurement - VisiSize Solo.

Particle Droplet Image Analysis (PDIA)

Size and shape measurement of a wide range of solid particles, liquid drops / droplets, gas bubbles etc can be performed by PDIA. No other diagnostic tool is as intuitive to use as direct imaging equipment - if you can operate a camcorder or digital camera, you can master a VisiSizer analyzer. VisiSizer not only provides accurate particle size distributions but also records images of your subject (particle / drop / droplet / bubble).

This gives VisiSizer the unique ability to generate particle sizing, drop sizing, (such as spray nozzle droplets), spray sizing, bubble sizing and velocity measurements and images of the particles / drops / droplets / bubbles simultaneously.

The technique works by capturing images of particles etc using high resolution cameras together with short pulse laser illumination to freeze the motion. Software then measures the particle size and shape and calculates the size distribution.

Image-based sizing measures shape

On the left is the first ever in-flight image of a droplet from an agricultural "air-inclusion" nozzle. From this image, taken from a VisiSize system, not only is the droplet non-spherical, but air bubbles are visible within the water drop.

Other particle sizing techniques such as PDA or laser diffraction would mis-size the droplet without indicating they had done so - and you would never have known about the air inclusions

Applications

How it works

The image (right) shows the optical arrangement used for particle / drop / bubble sizing (applied to a metered dose inhaler). A short flash of light from a laser illuminates a screen, which acts as a bright background behind the subject spray. The short pulse from the laser freezes the motion of the droplet, allowing blur-free visualisation of drop size and shape.

Images from the digital camera are transferred to a computer and high-speed real-time particle sizing software analyses the images obtained in order to build up a drop size distribution. By double-pulsing the laser in a technique similar to PIV, particle size vs. velocity distributions may also be measured. For more information about the technique see our in-flight sizing datasheet.
